2012 Norman Mailer Commendation Award

The Norman Mailer Center believes that it is important to recognize writers who preserve the history of our time.

The 2012 Norman Mailer Commendation for “Preserving the History of Our Time” was awarded to Caroline Stoessinger for her memoir, “A Century of Wisdom.” Stoessinger, a noted pianist, writes about the oldest living Holocaust survivor Alice Herz-Sommer, who credits piano playing with her ability to live a meaningful life.

The evening’s program included a reading by actress Ellen Burstyn, presentation and remarks by Itzhak Perlman, a short film by Shachar Langlev, and was attended by many friends of the Norman Mailer Center, the National Arts Club and Caroline herself. Guests included Dr. Elie Weisel, his wife Marion Weisel, Itzhak’s wife Toby Perlman, and Her Excellency Mrs. Edita Hrda, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations.

The Norman Mailer Center is not currently accepting applications or nominations for the Norman Mailer Commendation Award at this time.
