The Norman Mailer Center & The Norman Mailer Writer's Colony

Meals and logistical arrangements at Ucross Foundation and Pepperdine University

At Pepperdine University, attending Fellows can cook for themselves, since each apartment has a full size kitchen, or take their meals at one of two of the school's cafeterias which are open Monday through Friday during normal meal times. Please note that Pepperdine University is a dry campus and the housing provided is also dry.  Small restaurants and other dining are loacated through the Malibu colony just down the road from Pepperdine.  A list of eating establishments adjacent to the campus will be provided in each Fellow's welcome kit.

The Ucross Foundation will provide airport pick-ups and drop-offs in Sheridan, Wyoming, for the Mailer Fellows.  At Los Angeles International Airport, shuttle busses are available for the 24 mile drive to Pepprdine University campus.

The Mailer Center and/or the Ucross staff will assist all participants in logistical arrangements, i.e. shipping of books, personal belongings; offer weekly town trips for shopping and other errands; join writers at group dinners twice weekly; and help with day-to-day needs as they arise.

At Ucross, the Foundation provides healthy, nutritious meals cooked by a professionally trained chef. Residents prepare their own meals at breakfast and on the chef’s days off. The School House kitchen is amply stocked with prepared food and raw ingredients for cooking. In consideration of the kitchen staff and fellow residents, residents are required to clean up after themselves when making use of the kitchen. Lunch is prepared by the Ucross chef, 5 days a week, and is delivered to the studio door. A freshly prepared buffet-style dinner is served at the School House, 5 days a week, at 6:00 p.m. Residents as a group are responsible for light clean-up after dinner.

At Ucross, meals are prepared for a group and are designed to accommodate vegetarians and some, but not all, food restrictions. We cannot accommodate individual meal requests. Every effort is made to ensure food safety. Please note that food is prepared in a communal kitchen that is used by the Ucross Foundation Chef and other residents. Before accepting our Fellowship offer, we encourage those with food allergies or intolerances to contact the Residency Manager if you have any concerns.  Snack foods (chips, crackers, candy, soda, etc) are not provided by the Foundation.
