Accommodations at Ucross Foundation and Pepperdine University

Facilities for Residents

The fellowships offered by The Norman Mailer Writers Colony do not provide for any travel expenses to or from Sheridan Airport, Wyoming or Los Angeles International Airport.  However, Ucross will provide airport pick-ups and drop-offs in Sheridan, Wyoming, for the Mailer Fellows. In Los Angeles, shuttle busses are available to Pepperdine University.


The historic Ucross School House and the Clearmont Burlington Northern Train Depot have been renovated to include four bedrooms each. The dining area, communial living room and main kitchen are in the School House.


For the 2016 Norman Mailer Center retreat at Ucross, studio space is as follows: Two spacious writing studios are located in the Kocur Writer’s Retreat and two in the Depot. Two additional writing studios will be located in the complex of Rock Studios overlooking Piney Creek.


At Pepperdine each apartment contains two single bedrooms, one bathroom, living area and a kitchen. Each bedroom contains an extra-long full bed, desk/chair, dresser, night stand and closet. The bathroom contains two sinks, one shower and one toilet. The kitchen is equipped with a gas stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave, sink with disposal and a dishwasher. However utensils and dishes are not provided. The living room area is furnished with a couch, coffee table, end table, breakfast table, chairs and a flat screen TV.


The Ucross Foundation’s oldest buildings are the Big Red Barn and the Ranch House, circa 1880. The Barn houses the Art Gallery, the Loft conference space and a gift shop. The Ranch House accommodates administrative offices, a small meeting room, and the Alkire Library featuring work by Ucross Fellows. Visitors often tour the art gallery and historic house, which are open year round.
