The Norman Mailer Center & The Norman Mailer Writer's Colony

Each year the Norman Mailer Center recognizes writers from throughout the world, in all genres, whether established or emerging.

The Mailer Prize, the Center’s highest award, is given to writers whose work over the years have challenged readers’ perspectives on the world around them.  Those who in fully exercising their creativity, have applied themselves to the craft of writing with the rigor of an athlete. Those who thrive on dialogue and debate.  The Mailer Prize goes to writers who preserve the role of the engaged writer as not only a legitimate, but an indispensable voice in contemporary discourse.

The Norman Mailer High School, Two-year College and College Awards, in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English, identifies emerging writers who excel in the artful treatment of true subject matter, originality, quality of insight, voice, and style; arrangement of elements and materials; and overall aesthetic, emotional, or intellectual effect in their work.  Each winning student also receives a cash award of $2,500 to $5,000 .

The Norman Mailer Writing Award competition for High School Teachers, in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English, is open to full- and part-time teachers. The finalists’ work is judged by a distinguished panel of authors whose own work has been recognized over the years.  The winner selected receives a $5,000 cash prize and a fellowship to the Mailer Colony during the summer months.
